Shopify POS pricing: what Shopify publishes

Shopify publishes plan prices, in-person rates and — unusually for this group — the price of using a different payment provider. It also localises the currency, which is the first thing to check before quoting any figure from it.

What Shopify publishes

Shopify's POS pricing page, read on 17 September 2026, publishes plan prices, an in-person card rate per plan, and an additional fee for using a third-party payment provider. One important caveat applies to every figure below: the page renders prices in the currency of the visitor's country, and this reading was taken from a Canadian connection, so the amounts appeared in Canadian dollars. They are recorded here as they rendered, not as US prices.

The page also publishes a POS Pro add-on at CA$119 per location when billed yearly, and an introductory promotional price for the first three months. Hardware prices are not on the pricing page.

How the pricing model works

Shopify's model ties the card rate to the subscription tier: the more you pay monthly, the lower the published percentage. That is a straightforward trade, and it means the right plan depends on volume rather than on features alone. There is a break-even point between each pair of plans that you can calculate from your own monthly card volume in a few minutes.

The third-party fee works the same way in reverse. Using an outside payment provider is permitted and priced, so the question is arithmetic: does the processing rate you can get elsewhere beat Shopify's published rate by more than the extra 2%, 1% or 0.6% costs you? On the lower plans that gap is wide, which is why the fee tends to decide the answer rather than the processing rate does.

What Shopify does not publish

  • US-specific amounts to an overseas reader. The currency follows the visitor; confirm from a US connection.
  • The top tier's card rate. Described qualitatively, not published.
  • Hardware prices on the pricing page.
  • Cancellation detail beyond the term statement on the top tier.

What to check before choosing a plan

  1. Your monthly card volume, and the plan break-even points that follow from it.
  2. Whether you need POS Pro at each location, and whether that is billed yearly.
  3. If you are considering an outside processor: the all-in cost including the third-party fee, not the headline rate alone.
  4. Hardware: what you need, what it costs, and whether it is bought outright.
  5. On the top tier, the term length and what happens at renewal.

How an independent agent's quote differs

Shopify's structure is the most transparent in this comparison, which makes the comparison itself simple rather than adversarial. Its rate is blended: one percentage regardless of the card presented. We place the merchant account with a processor and name each layer — interchange as published by the card networks, network assessments, and the markup — so the price can be audited against the networks' own tables. On a retailer taking mostly debit at a decent volume, an itemised structure and a blended one can differ materially; at low volume the blended one often wins. The only way to know is to price both on your own twelve months.

Shopify publishes plan prices, but the page renders in the currency of the visitor's country. Read from a Canadian connection on 17 September 2026 it showed CA$49, CA$132 and CA$517 a month, a top tier from CA$3,400 on a one- or three-year term, and a POS Pro add-on at CA$119 per location billed yearly. Check the figures on the page from a US connection before relying on them.

As published on 17 September 2026, Shopify charges an additional 2%, 1% or 0.6% depending on plan when payments are taken through a payment provider other than its own. That fee is in addition to whatever the other provider charges.

Yes. Shopify is the one provider in this comparison that publishes both the option and its price — an extra percentage per transaction by plan. Whether that is worth it depends on how much lower the alternative processing rate is on your own volume.

The lower plans are described as available month to month. The top tier states a one- or three-year term. Detailed cancellation terms are not published on the pricing page.
