Toast POS pricing: what Toast publishes

Toast's pricing page publishes very little about the recurring cost. That is a fact about the page rather than a criticism, and it changes how a restaurant has to run the comparison.

What Toast publishes

Read on 17 September 2026, Toast's pricing page states that up-front costs consist of hardware and implementation, that both vary by hardware package and installation, and that 0% interest financing is available by application and subject to approval. That was the cost content rendered on the page.

Two practical notes. The page returns a 403 response to automated requests, so it was read in a browser on the same date rather than fetched. And Toast now markets a retail line alongside its restaurant products, so the navigation covers both segments even though the pricing detail is not published for either.

How the pricing model works

A quote-only model is not unusual in restaurant technology, and there are reasonable commercial reasons for it: hardware counts, installation, menu build and card volume all vary enormously between a coffee counter and a two-hundred-cover dining room. The consequence for a buyer is simply that nothing can be modelled before the quote arrives, and that the quote will usually be a bundle — software, hardware, installation and processing in one presentation.

Bundles are not a problem in themselves. They become one when the parts are never separated, because each part has a different term, a different renewal and a different exit cost. Financing hardware at 0% is genuinely useful; it is also a separate agreement, and it does not end when the software subscription does.

What to get in writing before signing

  1. The processing rate in full: percentage and per-item, split by card present, keyed and online, with monthly fees listed separately rather than netted into the rate.
  2. The monthly software cost per terminal and per location, and what happens when you add a till.
  3. The term, the renewal mechanism, the notice period, and the early termination amount as a number.
  4. Whether the hardware is bought, rented, or financed under a separate agreement, and the name of that agreement.
  5. What the implementation charge covers and whether it recurs.
  6. How menu, sales and customer data are exported if you leave.

If any of those six comes back as a verbal answer, ask for it on the order form. A restaurant POS decision is typically a multi-year commitment; the figures that govern those years belong in the document.

How an independent agent's quote differs

The structural difference is about where the processing margin sits. In a bundled quote it sits inside a single number, so raising or lowering it is invisible to you. We place the merchant account with a processor and name every fee: interchange as the card networks publish it, network assessments, and the markup shown on its own line, with the POS priced separately. That does not make any particular bundle expensive — it makes the bundle checkable, because you can price the same twelve months both ways.

Our restaurant payment processing page covers the parts specific to hospitality — tip handling, the downgrade ladder and the rules that decide which interchange category a sale lands in — and the free statement analysis reads three months of your current statements.

Not published on the pricing page. Term length, renewal, notice period and any early termination amount should be read in the agreement you are asked to sign, and the four figures confirmed in writing.

Toast sells its point of sale together with its own payment processing. If the ability to change processor later matters to you, ask that question explicitly before ordering, and get the answer in writing.
