EMV at the pump
The card networks moved counterfeit fraud liability at automated fuel dispensers to the party with the less secure technology, so a pump without a chip reader can leave you liable for counterfeit fraud. Upgrading dispensers is expensive, but so is the fraud.
Fuel pre-authorizations
Pumps pre-authorize an amount before fuelling and then capture the actual sale. Customers sometimes see the hold on their account; clear signage helps.
Fleet cards
Trucking companies and service fleets pay with fleet cards that require specific support. Accepting them brings steady commercial customers.
Thin margins
Because fuel margins are small, card fees are a large share of profit. Pricing with a fixed component can be better than pure percentage when fuel prices rise. The store side should be priced separately for its own mix.
