Counter, kiosk, drive-thru, app
A quick-service restaurant can take payments five ways in one hour. Counter taps and kiosk taps should both be card-present and priced as such. Drive-thru handhelds should be too. Online and app orders are card-not-present and cost more, so make sure they run through a gateway with fraud tools.
Small tickets at high volume
With average tickets modest and volume high, the fixed per-transaction fee is a big part of your cost. Ask for pricing on your average ticket and check whether debit is passed through at its lower cost.
Multi-location setups
Each location usually has its own merchant account and statement. Check for fees charged per location that add up, such as PCI, statement and gateway fees, and negotiate them at the group level.
Surcharges and fees
Quick-service customers are price-sensitive, and some places restrict surcharges. Where allowed, a surcharge must follow card network rules and local law. Many operators prefer lower base pricing and fewer junk fees.
