Best Clover alternatives for restaurants and retail

Clover publishes clear package prices — a monthly figure over 36 months, or a device price plus a software fee — but neither its retail nor its restaurant pricing page publishes a card-processing rate. That gap, and the 36-month framing itself, are what send merchants shopping the alternatives below.

Why merchants shop for a Clover alternative

Clover's retail and restaurant pricing pages, checked 17 September 2026, publish package prices two ways — a monthly figure spread over 36 months, or a device price up front plus a separate monthly software fee. What is missing from both pages is what usually triggers the search for an alternative.

  • No published processing rate. Neither pricing page shows a percentage or per-transaction fee for card processing, which on most accounts is the largest recurring cost of the three (hardware, software, processing). It has to be requested and quoted per account.
  • The 36-month framing changes what "monthly" means. A package shown at, for example, $180 a month for retail Standard is a three-year commitment framed as a monthly number. The comparable figure against a month-to-month competitor is the total across 36 months, not the headline monthly one.
  • No published contract terms behind that framing. The 36-month length is published; the cancellation terms, renewal mechanism and any early termination amount are not, on either pricing page.
  • Reseller pricing varies. Clover's own pages state the prices shown apply to buying online. The same hardware bought through a reseller or an agent is a different transaction and can carry different pricing — a detail that matters if the merchant did not buy directly from Clover.
  • A 1.75% instant-deposit fee on every plan. Rapid access to funds is charged at 1.75% of the amount transferred, a per-use cost that is easy to miss when comparing headline monthly prices.

Four Clover alternatives compared

What switching from Clover actually involves

  1. Contract end. The 36-month framing is published, but the mechanism to end it — cancellation notice, renewal, early termination amount — is not, on either Clover pricing page. Read the signed agreement, not the website, for the real end date.
  2. Hardware compatibility. Clover devices are sold with Clover's own processing; none of the four alternatives here publish a way to run Clover hardware on their systems. Whether an existing device is financed separately (and what happens to that financing on an early exit) is not published and needs to be asked directly, since it depends on whether it was bought online or through a reseller.
  3. Data export. None of the five providers reviewed here — Clover included — publish a data-export policy on their pricing pages. Confirm how product, customer and sales data move before switching.
  4. Re-underwriting. Square, Toast and Lightspeed all bundle or require their own processing to varying degrees, meaning a new merchant account and new underwriting on any of them. Shopify POS is the exception: its published third-party payment provider fee means the POS switch and the processing decision can be made separately.

The independent-agent angle

Clover's biggest published gap — no processing rate on either pricing page — is also where an independent agent adds the most value before you sign anything at all, Clover included. Because the rate is quoted per account and can vary by sales channel, it is worth getting an itemised, interchange-based quote in writing to compare against whatever Clover (or any bundled alternative) eventually quotes verbally. Shopify POS is the one alternative on this list where that comparison stays live even after the POS is chosen, since its third-party processing fee is published and can be weighed against an outside rate at any time.

The interchange-plus versus flat rate guide explains how to make that comparison honestly, and the free statement analysis runs it against your actual last three months of card statements.

Related questions

It depends on what is driving the switch. If it is the unpublished processing rate, Square publishes its full rate schedule. If it is the 36-month framing, Lightspeed publishes an actual notice period and termination formula instead of a bundled term. If it is retail-specific features, Shopify POS is built for retailers selling online and in person. Price the shortlist against a written quote before choosing.

The most commonly cited published reason is that neither of Clover's pricing pages — retail or restaurant — publishes a card-processing rate. The package prices are shown clearly, spread over 36 months or as an up-front device cost plus software fee, but the largest recurring cost, processing, is quoted per account and can differ by whether the device was bought online or through a reseller.

Clover's pricing pages state the prices shown are for buying online, and processing is sold with the device. Whether a specific unit can be moved to another processor depends on who sold it and how it was financed — this has to be asked directly, since it is not published.

No. The 36-month figure covers the package shown — device and, on the higher tiers, a stated software plan. It does not include the processing rate, which is quoted separately and not published, or the 1.75% instant-deposit fee that applies on every plan when used.
